Government & NGO Training We provide Personal Safety Training in the following sectors: Private health club membership in the UK is around 3.38 million while public leisure centre membership came to 2.46 million, making a total of 5.8 million members. Reported incidents involving viloence, abuse and threatening behaviour has been rising steadily. Leisure sevice workers have a high risk of assault with over 99,000 documented cases in 2005. A recent survey show that among 747 people living independently, who were placed in care facilities, 42 were involved in 79 different incidents in which the police were called.
All Public Service Workers with a direct interface with the public are at risk. Almost 2 in 5 workers (38%), interviewed in a nationwide study, had experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months; 10% had experienced physical abuse.
Attacks on Local Government staff have increased in the last 10 years. According to UNISON; the Public Service Union:
Even Health Workers are not exempt from violence in the workplace. Over 50% of Social Workers have been subjected to violence in the course of their work. Social workers working with the mentally ill and children were most at risk.
Some transport staff face Personal Safety challenges every day of their working life. For instance, statistics from the UK Railway Safety and Standards Board show reported assaults against rail staff is up 24 per cent on the previous year, with 3090 incidents recorded.
Attacks at Primary Schools have included Education Workers being attacked by parents, children, siblings and strangers. In England alone, there were 221 attacks on teachers last year, and 1,128 between 2000 and 2006.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) states that one third of community nurses working alone have been assaulted or harassed in the last two years.
Community Centres have been the site of numerous acts of aggression. According to the UK Government, workers in this sector are at a significantly increased risk of violent and abusive behaviour.
